I bought a few Hitachi Ultrastar 3TB hard disks off Ebay. All are still running without issue as of June 2020 from the date of purchase documented below. They run somewhat hotter than the other 3TB Seagates but are definitely very reliable.

2018[edit | edit source]

I bought another couple of these 3TB HGST Ultrastar from Newegg for $120 + $12 shipping, minus a discount of $15 which works out to approximately $58.5 per drive again on June 2018.

Like last year, the drives arrived in good shape, though this time wrapped in bubble wrap instead of being in a fancy hard drive bubble sleeve. The two drive's SMART output can be found at:

Both had about 23,000 hours and about 20 start/stop counts.

2017[edit | edit source]

I bought a refurbished 3TB HGST Ultrastar hard drive from Newegg for $80 CAD plus $5 shipping. I intend to use this drive for backing up data, so it will typically be sitting offline on a shelf. The next cheapest drive from MemoryExpress at the time of writing is a 3TB BarraCuda for $125 at the moment which makes this refurbished drive a decent deal.

The disk arrived in good shape. I ran badblocks on this disk with no issues found. The drive didn't click or make any odd noises and did not run excessively hot as noted by some reviewers on Newegg. The drive came completely wiped as everything was zeroed out (ie. no sensitive data on them).

Here's the smartctl output when I first powered it on. As expected, these refurbished drives have a lot of hours racked up but has few power cycles as it was probably used in a storage pool of some sort.
