The University of Calgary's managed IT printers are all Ricoh printers. The printers are currently C4504 (pre-2023) and is currently transitioning to C4510 (post 2023).

The printers should be preconfigured on all managed IT computers but if you use a self-managed machine, you will have to set up the printers manually.

How to install Ricoh C4504 / C4510 on Linux

You will need to install the system-config-printer package for your distro and then configure the printer using this utility.

Fedora / Red Hat

Install the following packages: dnf -y install system-config-printer cups-client samba-client

Ubuntu / Debian-based

Install the following packages: apt install system-config-printer cups-client smbclient samba

NixOS

Add in the system-config-printer package to your systemPackages list and then run nixos-switch rebuild.

Add the printer queue

Run system-config-printer from the Terminal.

Click on 'Add' and select 'Network Printer -> Find Network Printer -> Windows Printer via SAMBA'.

In the SMB Printer dialog:

  • Enter smb://itctspcp01.uc.ucalgary.ca/Staff. If you are a student, you must use the Student queue (cost per use applies) smb://uc/itctspcp06.uc.ucalgary.ca/Student.
  • Select 'Prompt user if authentication is required'

Next, when asked to choose a driver, specify the PPD file for the C4510. This is available from: https://www.openprinting.org/download/PPD/Ricoh/PDF/Ricoh-IM_C4510_PDF.ppd

Configure the printer with 'Finisher SR3310' and no other installable options.

Do not print a test page. Instead, finish the setup first and then submit a test page. This is because you need to authenticate for the print job to submit properly which won't happen until you finish the printer setup.

After you submit a print job, open the print queue and click on 'Authenticate'. When prompted to log in, enter your UCIT credentials. If authentication fails, try adding a 'uc/' prefixed to your username (Eg. 'uc/username').
